John Autry for City Council District 5

It has been one of the great joys of my life representing District 5 on  Charlotte City Council.

I come from humble beginnings in Fayetteville NC, as my parents split up when I was 3 months old.  My paternal grandmother raised me until my father re-married in 1959 as I was starting elementary school.  He had since bought a home in Concord.  In 1961 my father, who was a truck driver, was in a crash and injured his back.  He never returned to work and the trucking company was non-union, which left him with no benefits.  Eventually we lost the house in Concord, and moved back to Fayetteville taking up residence in Cross Creek Courts, a public housing project.  After two back operations and 3 years later we were destitute.  My father was sleeping on a mattress on the living room floor. The summer between the 6th and 7th grade I moved back in with my grandparents and on a very rare occasion had any interaction with my mother or father.

As time progressed I became active in scouting rising to Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scout Master.  I was tapped into the Order of the Arrow and achieved Brotherhood membership. In high school I was Junior Class President, a member of the Future Farmers of America, Drama club president, and held a statewide office in the Library Club as Vice President.

After completing high school I wanted a change of scenery and moved to California to attend college and ended up joining the Navy.  I served from 1972 to 1976 and received an honorable discharge.  I returned to school after completing my military service.  Being wiser, more disciplined and in love I thought I was ready to get married.  So I did and had two daughters, Sara Melissa and Jennifer Camille.  As does happen occasionally the marriage broke up and in 1980 I moved to Seattle, Washington for the company I was working for.

I saw a news story about the growing film business in North Carolina and decided to return to NC and pursue my dream of a career in the film industry.  I have worked as a grip, gaffer, editor, camera operator, director and on camera talent.  In 1999 I directed a series of public service announcements for a local network affiliate.  One of the spots received the national Emmy for best public service announcement. Steady employment at living wages offered me the opportunity to partner with some friends in a small business venture. With hard work and dedication it has blossomed into an enterprise that serves municipalities along with colleges and universities across the country.

In 1985 I met Rebecca Wyndham and 4 years later settled down with her and her 2 children, Jennifer Ann and Christopher.  I have since adopted Jennifer and Chris. My daughter Jennifer Camille from my first marriage has given us two grandchildren.  Keara age 12 and Koal age 10 who reside in Reno, NV. On October 21, 2012 our son Christopher and his wife Shaunis became the proud parents of Jude Alexander-Levon Autry, our third grandchild.

In 1999 I became involved with our neighborhood association in challenging a rezoning petition.  That experience inspired me to become more involved.  After being elected to two terms on the Mecklenburg Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors I was approached to consider representing District 5 on City Council. I was elected in November 2011.

I was born a Democrat.  My early life experiences told me that unfortunate things can happen to good people.  Circumstances beyond their control can affect everyone around them. It also taught me that people need security, a sense of belonging and love. These are the reasons I adopted my stepchildren.  This is why I am a Democrat, because I believe in being a part of a party of compassion and inclusion. But more than that, I am a self made man that will continue to work for you with the integrity that I live my life by. I believe in the power of people and will strive to improve the quality of life for us all.

Thank you
